Mother's Home school Journal

Been awhile since I done this type of post.  So what are we doing during these long cold months of winter

In our School:
We are keeping up with our our lessons plans but I am suffering for the first time from a little burn out.  I know this happens to us all so I am hoping it is for the short term.  Just the other day my daughter mentioned that we are not taking quite as many field trips, I have a few more trips planned in the upcoming weeks so maybe that will help me get over this minor burn out.

Where are we going in the next week or two:
We are going to a pottery class, a cultural center to learn about Hindu, continuing to have our Science lessons with friends and heading out to the Viking Festival in York.

What we are reading:
I just finished reading The Apothecary's Daughter by Julie Klassen and have now started reading the Shadows on the Crown by Patricia Bracewell.
The kids and I are reading lots of books on India and the mythology of that country.  This is a interest of my daughter.  We are also reading about the Hindu faith.
Princess is reading the series Son of Angels by Jerel.
Little Man is reading, and rereading How to play Minecraft for beginners. LOL:)

What I am thinking/worrying about:
We are moving this summer...back to the states.  I have mixed feelings on this.  I have truly loved our experiences living here in England.  While we are heading back to our old home I am worried about how and where we will find such fantastic home education resources.   I don't particularly like where we are moving too, even though that is where our house is.  The area was not very welcoming and the children and I never felt like we could find our place.  So moving back there is bringing back old insecurities and some bad memories.  I hope the children and I can manage the move back there much more easily this time around.  I am doing a lot of praying for an easy transition back home for us all.

What are we watching:
We are watching The story of India on Netflix.  I hope to be going out with some friends to see Les Miz this weekend, I feel like I am the last person on earth to see this movie:).

What am I cooking:
We went to a local Pub and I had with out a doubt the best corn beef hash in my life.  I am not exaggerating (I don't even like corn beef hash, usually).  I asked the pub for the recipe and they gave it to me much to my surprise.   The recipe calls for you to Brine the meat for up to 2 weeks.  I have never done this before so I am in the process of giving this a try.  If it works and I am able to recreate this fantastic dish I will share the recipe on the blog at some point in the future.

Share a picture:
I ordered some Henna paste from amazon and the kids and I enjoyed experimenting with designs on our hands.

I don't think any one will be hiring me for henna designs any time soon:)

  1. I love henna tattoos! They are very popular around here as we live down the street from a Vedic Center (rumor has it that it is the largest in the U.S. - I have not confirmed this). Do you have to move back to where you lived before? Homeschooling is so popular in so many places, it seems like you aught to be able to live somewhere with lots of homeschool resources.

    1. Glad someone in the states knows about it,my poor daughter has had so many of her US friends ask her why she draw up her arms. She is now very embarrassed about the henna designs and she was so excited by them when we did them.:(

  2. I would be worried about moving too, but it's probably more fear of the unknown than anything else. Once you are settled I think that feeling will wear off pretty fast....... Plus, when you move back it will be a great time to start studying American History.

  4. Cool tattoo/drawing! My kids would love this. Do you rec a certain type/brand? And do you receommend a stencil or just free hand dawing.

Also, I completely hear you on moving and also moving to the states....two separate and distinct worries. If there's anything I can do, pls LMK. We are in NY. If you'd like to contact me privatly if you are coming to my state (you never know) maybe we can talk. I have had negative experiences in several arenas the 8 years we've been HSing (with fellow HSers, neighbors, etc, etc...) So I do understand what you may be anticipating happening ( again)
    Hang in there....
I'll see you soon...here or my blog and LMK if I can do anything.

    xo

    1. That is very nice of you Chris, going back to our old neighborhood is something weighing heavily on my mind at the moment. Unfortunately we won't be near you in NY as we are moving to the mid west. It is not to know others have had similar experiences and I am really praying hard that it will be easier this time around. I am struggling to keep a positive attitude about it.

  5. When I think about all of the field trips adventures and the in house one; you have been one busy mother. Maybe you just need to take a break and enjoy doing nothing important. You are such an amazing homeschooler.
I don't know how long you have been in England; but I would assume your old neighborhood in the US has probably changed a lot. It will probably be a whole new experience.
I will look forward to your recipe. I imagine learning about the Hindu religion will be interesting.
Just take a deep breath and do something fun. Yes, Les Mis will be a good break. The movie is a little tense; but I think it was one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.
    Blessings and hugs!
