Art Program

The kids and I are continuing with our art program, I am trying to do one artist per month. We are using the program Meet the Masters. So far it is going well. The hardest part is finding the correct and good art supplies. It is times like this that I miss shopping in the States where you can find anything you want at the mall:) Here it is a bit like a scavenger hunt trying to find the correct art supplies:(. In addition to doing the program on-line I have included having the kids complete a notebooking page about each artist that I am adding to their art portfolios. I also include reading additional art books about the artist, my favorite being Mike Venizia "The Greatest Artist" series.

This time around we have been learning all about Mary Cassatt and how to use chalk pastels. Mary Cassatt is an American artist who studied mainly in France. Her artwork is mainly relaxed portraits of women and children. Often wearing wearing decorative hats. In the art project the kids needed to decide on the type of hat they wished to add to their person. I did help the kids draw their hats based on a few sketches offered by the program. Then the children used colored chalk pastels to make a pattern on the hat.

Little Man chose a baseball cap and colored multicolors:)

Princess chose a Sherlock Holmes type hat and did a diamond pattern on her hat.

My attempt, fancy hat:) I tried creating a plaid pattern.

We all continue to enjoy this art program and look forward to working on the next artist!

If you have been on any field trip with your children please be sure to link up at the Field trip hop and share in your adventures:)

Also be sure to join in the NOBH for the month of August

  1. Hobbycraft is awesome for such things!

I'm not sure if there is one local though, I *love* everything and you get so many ideas and so many empty wallets after being there. lol

I think specialist stores are always expensive.

  2. What a great idea! My grandkids are coming over for 'Gramma's sleep-over' this weekend (6 out of 9) We are going to use your idea for our art project. (Though my plaid certainly won't look anything like yours!) Thank you so much!

  3. Hi Anna-Marie,
I also bought the Meet the Masters program, but have not started it yet :/ Your pictures look beautiful and love all the hats! It looks like a great art program and I look forward to somehow working it into my already busy schedule! Clicked a vote for you!

  4. We have MTM but haven't used it in a long time. I need to remember to have her start on it again. They did a great job on the hats (you too)!

  5. What a great learning experience. I love how you are having them learn about an artist and then have the children do an art project. I loved the hats. I remember doing a music project with my children. We listened to different kinds of music and then studied the composer. It was a fun activity.
    Keep on enjoying those moments.

  6. We are actually looking forward to this art program every month which is a huge thing for us. My art skills are severely lacking and this gives so much guidance for us.

  7. Do you like the new look of MTM? I love it and think Gohan will greatly appreciate the more mature appearance (he turns 13 soon). Have you tried Dick Blick?

  8. Hi Maureen thanks for that link I will be exploring it today:)

  9. Visiting from HHH. Looks like a great art program! I'll have to check that one out. Thanks!

  10. Just reminded myself that I need to check out the new MTM site. Stopped by from the TOS blog hop.
