I miraculously located in a box Daddy's old geology rock hammer--it has got to be 20 years old:) |
I bought each kid a geode |
We don't have safety googles so I had the kids wrap the geode in a dish towel to prevent sharp shards of rock going into their eyes, BTW, this ruined my dish towel so I wouldn't recommend it:( |
Those things were harder to break then it looks, so we all took turns trying to break them open. Just when the kids were losing patience.... |
we opened a geode:)! |
Next we went upstairs and began to examine our crystals and using the guide from the box determined our type of crystals |
When Daddy came home the kids showed him their special stones and he doubled check to see if the kids were accurate in identifying their crystals...They were:) |
Next Daddy showed the kids the Mohs method of identifying a rocks hardness. We will be working more on this in a week or two. |
This was a very interesting experience. I love rocks and have a few around. I have a friend that is a big time rock collector. You do teach your children some great lessons.

It's so cool your geodes had crystals, and I like the way you connected it to the hardness and rock study. We plan to cover some of this later this year during our Earth study, so this is good timing for us. Thanks for sharing.
